The Centre for Critical thinking and Resourceful Research in Africa in collaboration with the Department of History and Archaeology, Université d'Abomey-Calavi of Benin Republic, Cotonou announces the 2nd Outstanding African Thinkers Conference on Theophile Obenga. Aimed at locating outstanding African intellectuals who privilege African thought scheme and insist on reinventing Africa through her intellectual archive; and scholars of African extraction, whose works have multidisciplinary appeal and potentials, OAT conference creates a space for scholars and researchers of African extraction to engage the works of such intellectuals in a manner that will create more dialogue from their works and empower a more productive future scholarship through their works. In 2018, the first conference was convened by CECTRRA and held at Institute of African Studies, University of Ghana and was centered on the works of the Pan-blackist multidisciplinary thinker Chinweizu. This second conference will engage the works of the Congolese scholar Theophile Obenga. It is scheduled for Université d'Abomey-Calavi, Cotonou.
Theophile Obenga, is a Congolese intellectual and scholar-historian, linguist and philosopher whose writings reveal an attempt to lead Africa forwards by helping Africa (re)locate a neglected past. Obenga holds a Ph.D. in Letters, Arts and Humanities from Montpellier University, France, is a member of the French Association of Egyptologists (Société Française D'Egyptologie) and of the African Society of Culture (Présence Africaine). He contributed as part of the United Nations Educational and Scientific Cultural Organization (UNESCO) program, to the writing of the General History of Africa and the Scientific and Cultural History of Humanity. He was, until the end of 1991, Director General of the Centre International des Civilisations Bantu (CICIBA) in Libreville, Gabon. He is the Director and Chief Editor of the journal Ankh. From January 28 to February 3, 1974, at Cairo, Egypt, Théophile Obenga accompanied Cheikh Anta Diop as Africa's representatives (there were also numerous professors from Egypt and Sudan) to the UNESCO symposium on "The Peopling of Ancient Egypt and the Deciphering of the Meroitic Script".
With more than 23 academic publications including Ancient Egypt and Black Africa: A Student's Handbook for the Study of Ancient Egypt in Philosophy, Linguistics and Gender Relations, edited by Amon Saba Saakana, London: Karnak House, 1992,Theophile Obenga presents before our eyes a deliberate and innovative effort by an African intellectual to bridge the gap between the linguistic divide in Africa as he insists on a form of scholarship that (re)members Africa.
This conference will raise and engage a number of issues in relation to the works of Theophile Obenga. It will engage the future of his scholarship for African destiny and humanity. Issues that will be addressed include the followings:
i. Historicising African Philosophy and Philosophising through African History-Engaging Obenga.
ii .The Language Question in African Scholarship- the Contribution of Theophile Obenga
iii. Philosophy and History in Contemporary Africa through the Works of Theophile Obenga
iv. Constructing the Intellectual History of Black Africa-From Where to Where and From When to When?
v. Egyptology and the Promise of an A New Intellectual Culture
vi. Is/Should Egyptology Still Engage the Contemporary African Mind?
vii. Theorising on the African Past for an African Present.
viii. Arabization, Westernization and the Question of African identity
ix. Options for Modern African scholarship – Disciplinary, Multidisciplinary, Interdisciplinary or Transdisciplinary
x. Globalisation and the Challenge of an African Humanities
xi. The Humanities and the Challenge of an African tradition
xii. The Language Divides in Africa-Anglophone, Francophone, Lusophone and the Challenge of Intellectual tradition in Africa
xiii. Multiple identities and intellectual hybridity for scholarship in Africa–The Burden, the Gain
xiv. Translation and the Dilemma of producing knowledge for and on Africa
Papers could go beyond this to address issues that reflect contemporary challenges of African scholarship.

Le Centre for Critical thinking and Resourceful Research in Africa (CECTRRA) en collaboration avec l'Université d'Abomey-Calavi organise la 2ème Grande Conférence des Penseurs Africains sur l'oeuvre de Théophile Obenga. La conférence a pour but de repérer les grands penseurs et chercheurs africains, dont les travaux revêtent non seulement un intérêt et un potentiel multi-disciplinaires mais aussi qui privilégient la pensée africaine et le recours aux archives intellectuelles africaines en vue du renouvellement des humanités (Lettres, Arts, Sciences humaines et sociales) africaines. Elle vise à créer un espace d'échanges et de discussions entre chercheurs et universitaires d'origine africaine et d'ailleurs pour davantage de dialogue autour de leurs travaux et des archives intellectuelles africaines pour un meilleur avenir de l'Afrique. En 2018, le CECTRRA a organisé la première édition à l'Institute of African Studies de l'Université du Ghana à Legon autour des travaux des figures panafricanistes notamment Ibekwe Chinweizu. La deuxième conférence projette d'examiner les travaux du chercheur et universitaire Théophile Obenga; elle est prévue pour se tenir à l'Université d'Abomey-Calavi au Bénin. Cette proposition est motivée par le fait qu'une bonne partie de l'oeuvre de Théophile Obenga est en français et que certains des participants voudront intervenir dans cette langue.
A la fois historien, linguiste et philosophe, Théophile Obenga est un chercheur dont les travaux s'inscrivent dans le projet de faire avancer l'Afrique à partir d'une réappropriation de son passé négligé. Il est titulaire d'un doctorat de 3ème cycle en lettres, arts et sciences humaines de l'Université de Montpellier (France) et d'un doctorat d'Etat ès Lettres de l'Université Paris-I-Sorbonne. Il est membre de la Société Française d'Egyptologie et de la Société Africaine de Culture (Présence Africaine). Sous l'égide de l'UNESCO, il a participé à la rédaction des volumes de l'Histoire générale de l'Afrique et de l'Histoire scientifique et culturelle de l'Humanité. Jusqu'en 1991, il était Directeur Général du Centre International des Civilisations Bantoues (CICIBA) à Libreville (Gabon) puis professeur et directeur du Centre d'études africaines de l'Université d'Etat de San Francisco aux Etats-Unis d'où il prit sa retraite en 2009. Il est également directeur et rédacteur en chef de la revue d'égyptologie et des civilisations africaines, Ankh. Du 28 janvier au 4 février 1974, il participa avec Cheikh Anta Diop et d'autres chercheurs d'Egypte et du Soudan à la mémorable conférence sur le Peuplement de l'Egypte ancienne et le déchiffrement de l'écriture méroétique au Caire en Egypte.
Théophile Obenga est l'auteur de plus d'une vingtaine d'ouvrages au nombre desquels L'Afrique dans l'Antiquité : Égypte ancienne, Afrique noire, (1973), Afrique centrale précoloniale : documents d'histoire vivante, (1974), Pour une nouvelle histoire (1980), Les Bantu : langues, peuples, civilisations (1985), La philosophie africaine de la période pharaonique : 2780-330 avant notre ère (1990), Origine commune de l'égyptien ancien, du copte et des langues négro-africaines modernes : introduction à la linguistique historique africaine (1993), La Géométrie égyptienne : contribution de l'Afrique antique à la mathématique mondiale (1995), Cheikh Anta Diop, Volney et le Sphinx : contribution de Cheikh Anta Diop à l'historiographie mondiale (1996), Le sens de la lutte contre l'africanisme eurocentriste (2001), L'université africaine dans le cadre de l'Union africaine (2003), L'Égypte, la Grèce et l'école d'Alexandrie : histoire interculturelle dans l'Antiquité : aux sources égyptiennes de la philosophie grecque (2005).
Par ses travaux, il offre une perspective volontariste et innovante de la recherche scientifique africaine en tentant de surmonter la division linguistique tout en s'appuyant sur le passé lointain du continent.
La conférence débattra, entre autres sujets, des questions suivantes:
i- Recherche scientifique africaine et question de la langue: la contribution de Théophile Obenga
ii- Philosophie et histoire dans l'histoire contemporaine de l'Afrique
iii- Construire une histoire intellectuelle africaine authentique : de quand à quand ? D'où à où ?
iv- Egyptologie et promesse d'une nouvelle culture intellectuelle
v- L'égyptologie engage-t-elle toujours la pensée africaine contemporaine ?
vi- Mathématiques et physique contemporaines, quelle conscience du legs égyptien antique ?
vii- Multidisciplinarité, interdisciplinarité moderne et excellence disciplinaire : le défi de Théophile Obenga
viii- Mondialisation et le défi des humanités africaines.
