Greetings! My name is Danielle Sanchez and I am an assistant professor in the History Department at Colorado College. I am one of the founding editors of Historifans, a pop culture/digital history site that seeks to create conversations that link current historical research with contemporary fandoms.
Historifans launched last month and has already received fantastic responses from readers. So far, we published the following articles:
- "From Sango to "Fat Thor": Gods of Thunder, Grief, and Mental Healthcare" by Danielle Sanchez, Assistant Professor, Colorado College
- "The Amabie Boom: From Mizuki Shigeru fandoms to COVID-19" by Kathryn Tanaka, Associate Professor, University of Hyogo
- "Orientalism in George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire Series" by Nick Sprenger, Doctoral Candidate, Rutgers University
- "Droid Rights and the Lumpenproletar-E8: The Potential of a Fanonian Revolution in Star Wars" by Danielle Sanchez, Assistant Professor, Colorado College
- "Superheroes Under the Big Top" by Madeline Steiner, Postdoctoral Fellow, University of South Carolina
In the next few weeks, we will publish the following articles:
- "'If a planet is not in our records then it does not exist'": Star Wars, Digital Archives, and Pedagogy" by Danielle Sanchez, Assistant Professor, Colorado College
- "'We Need to be Put in Check'": Law, Government, and Accountability in Captain America: Civil War by Dustin Cranford, Doctoral Candidate, University of Maryland
- "Neon Genesis Evangelion, Ikari Shinji, and J.S. Bach: Using Music to Define the Japanese Yūtōsei" by Heike Hoffer
- "Ann Romano: What Took You So Long? Understanding One Day at a Time As the First American Sitcom About Divorce" by Stephanie Margolin, Associate Professor and Librarian, Hunter College
- And so much more!
Historifans is looking for contributors who want to geek out and write articles about the connections between contemporary pop culture and their scholarly interests. We are interested in articles that connect pedagogy, theory, sociology, history, anthropology, and/or other areas of inquiry to major fandoms including (but not limited to) Star Wars, Marvel, DC, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Star Trek, Lego, and Doctor Who. We also welcome digital humanities articles/projects. Every article that we receive will go through a full review process.
Articles should be no more than 1500 words long and must be accessible for non-academic audiences.
We highly encourage graduate students, early career academics, alt-ac professionals, non-traditional scholars, and people from historically marginalized and excluded groups to submit articles.
SPECIAL SERIES ANNOUNCEMENT!
Since the fashion trends of the 1990s made a major comeback earlier this year, the editors of Historifans decided that this is the perfect time to create a special series that focuses on the good, bad, and ugly of pop culture in the 90s.
Ideas for potential topics:
- TV shows: Living Single, The X-Files, Seinfeld, Animaniacs, 90210, In Living Color
- Sports/Athletes: USA Gymnastics in the 1996 Olympics, Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, the 1997 Tyson vs. Holyfield fight
- Celebrities: Mary Kate and Ashley, Princess Diana, Naomi Campbell, JTT
- Popular films: Beauty and the Beast, Clueless, Home Alone, The Big Lebowski, Titanic, Face/Off, Now and Then
- Toys/Games: Tamagotchi Pets, Tickle Me Elmo, American Girl dolls, Super Mario World, Mortal Kombat
- Popular music: Nirvana, "The Macarena," Spice Girls, Selena, East vs. West Coast Rap
- Style: Starter jackets, crimped hair, Tommy Hilfiger, Delia's, JNCO
- …or anything else related to 1990s pop culture. The possibilities are endless.
We are looking for articles that historicize and analyze 1990s pop culture in exciting ways. Like all of our Historifans articles, articles should be approximately 1500 words, incorporate current historical research, and must be accessible/readable for non-academic audiences. Every pitch and article that we receive will go through a full review process.
