another article (sorry, it is in french, from Le Monde) about racism in the maghreb. it follows the discussion occasioned by moses's article on the rise of identity-hardness and racism. in this case it is the rise of arab identity politics in tunisia, algeria, and morocco, grounded in the attacks on sub-saharan africans as "other." the racism has always been there, but it is hardening along with the rise of tunisian and moroccan identities—in part in reaction to european rejections of migrants from north africa.
the piece shows how the rise in racism in north africa is marked by the ugliness of violence and worse:
