Just last month, the Surgeon General of the United States, Dr. Vivek Murthy, declared an advisory about the devastating impact of loneliness and isolation in the United States. Social isolation, he said, should be given the same priority as other devastating health issues, such as smoking, obesity, and substance abuse. In fact, isolation and loneliness have a direct impact on health, with a 29% increase in the risk of heart disease, 32% stroke, 50% dementia, and premature death by 60%. Additionally, people who feel lonely and isolated are nearly two times as likely to develop depression and anxiety. So, what can we do?  According to the Surgeon General, social connection is one of the most important factors in addressing loneliness and isolation. That means getting involved with each other and our communities and making connections in the real world. It means cultivating a culture of connection that will impact our daily habits. It also means taking a good look at our current relationship with technology and being critical about how we interact with people in meaningful ways. By providing a way for people to connect and organize, we're helping to build the real-world, social infrastructure that brings us together. We believe that getting online is really about getting offline, and connecting with people in our communities, strengthening the social fabric, and making sure that no one feels isolated and lonely. #technology #people #Boonoob #connections
