The u.s. is not the question. It is china's role in africa, and how we all are to assess it. I am as curious about it as the next person; and i am far from convinced that the congo is making out well at all. Not just the state itself, but the people of the congo in many ways: the conditions of mining, the money they are getting in exchange for their labor, and most of all, the ownership of the mines. It isn't just china, either, that needs to be challenged. Canada, other asian states, whichever mine owners are in change of the mines, all need oversight.
Right now china has bought up the most.
I'd like to know how human rights watch views the mines, they are the "gold mine" of information on whether human rights are abused

Labelled the "deal of the century", it is the largest contract China has undertaken with an African partner. In return for infrastructure development – from hospitals to roads – to the tune of 3 billion dollars, the Chinese partners were granted mining access to deposits of cobalt and copper, valued at some 93 billion dollars, around Kolwezi in the south-eastern DRC.
