I've never accepted or bought into the hype and tenets of liberal democracy, especially when it comes to Africa.
I have been criticizing liberal democracy as unsuitable to Nigeria/Africa for almost 20 years, including on this list.
Remember my numerous debates and discussions with our dear departed friend, Professor Ken Harrow on the subject?
I have published essays on the subject in several publications.
One of those essays even got translated into Arabic and was republished by an Egyptian publication.
Because of those publications, a major Swedish newspaper sought me out for an interview on the subject, which was published.
I have always criticized and sought to deconstruct the positively framed discursive consensus of democratization in Africa in the 1990s and 2000s, seeing it as a seminal moment of grand deception and Western ideological and political conquest of Africa rather than a positive baseline of democratic ascendancy. It was a Western liberal democratic imposition rather than democratization in an African and organic sense.
I'm glad that, gradually, my idea is resonating. Obasanjo has now disavowed liberal democracy for Africa and is now preaching the gospel what he calls Afro-democracy.
Former Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti is now pushing for the consensus-based, non-adversarial, non-zero-sum electoral contest that I've been advocating for years as a replacement for the winner-takes-all adversarial elections of liberal democracy.
