--Last week, the internet was rife withrumors of a coup in Ivory Coast.Social media outlets amplifiedthe claim.
Here are six explanationsfor the widespread rumor:
1. There was really an attemptedcoup against the highly unpopularleader, perceived to be a Frenchpuppet. It failed, but the rumor milldid not catch up with thechanging reality fast enough.
2. It was a palace coup.Ouattara is no longer calling theshots, and is now a figurehead. The verified gunshots wereproof of internal strife.
3. Ouattara and his backersengineered the rumor to divertattention from drone deals etc.
4. Psychological warfare againstthe regime by domestic critics, enemies and activists onsocial media, aimed at instigatinga real coup.
5. The Traore effect: Wishfulthinking by supportersof Traore - hoping for regionalgeopolitical transformation.
6. A ploy to trap domestic andregional enemies into revealingallegiance- or lack of it.
As the situation unfolds wewatch with bated breath.
