Well this is quite true. I came to the same conclusion a while ago
after coming across two great analyses. The US is now starting its
hypersonic missile program. It is lagging behind China by far.
Trump's sudden embrace of NATO last week may be recognition
of weakness in this field. But NATO countries are all behind
with the exception of Turkey which is working on it, but
still does not have a full fledged operational system.
China may be ahead of Russia in this field. Not sure.
All that glitters is not gold.
