June 16, 2025 – Washington, D.C. — Zumunta Association USA Inc., a pan‑Northern Nigerian Diaspora organization, is deeply alarmed by the escalating violence in Northern and Middle Belt Nigeria.
From Plateau to Zamfara, and now it is Benue. "Now it is Benue, it has been Benue and the hinterlands of the Middle Belt region of Nigeria — when will this insanity stop?"
In the most recent attack in Yelewata (Guma LGA, Benue State) between the night of June 13 and early morning June 14, suspected gunmen killed at least 100 people, burned homes, and left many injured or missing. Similar attacks in May claimed about 42 lives in other parts of Gwer West LGA.
These horrific losses, combined with brutal killings in Plateau and Zamfara—including the murder of former Talata‑Mafara LGA administrator and four others—underscore a tragic pattern of lawlessness, division, and impunity across the region.
We demand:
- Immediate, decisive intervention by the Nigerian government and security forces.
- Thorough investigations into each atrocity, with perpetrators brought to justice.
- Sustained support for reconciliation and non‑violent conflict resolution throughout the Middle Belt.
These are not abstract figures; they are mothers, fathers, children, and entire communities under siege. If the Nigerian government cannot protect its people, then whose responsibility, is it?
Zumunta Association USA Inc. stands with all victims in Plateau, Zamfara, Benue, and beyond. We urge Nigerian authorities, community leaders, and international partners to end this cycle of violence now.
