Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - An insight on why Nigeria is Nigeria

Colleagues:

Take particular note of the YouTube presenter's claim that even though Dangote Refinery is a Nigeria-based operation, it is compelled to buy Nigerian crude oil through 3rd parties instead of directly from NNPC. What then is the reason for the existence of NNPC? Despite the fact that Nigeria is among the largest crude oil producers in the world, Dangote Refinery  has also had to import crude oil because it is not being adequately supported by the domestic crude oil supply, according to the presenter.

All these factors ultimately avoidably increase the cost of production as well as the price that the consumer pays at the fuel pump. They also impact what Dangote Refinery can contribute as tax revenue to the federal government. In addition, they consequently exercerbate domestic inflationary pressures.

This experience of Dangote Refinery, as reported, is so weighty and so critical to the Nigerian and the larger African political economies, that it warrants the full scrutiny and attention of this forum.
