📢 Call for Papers!
-Have you conducted field research on Africa from abroad or on African communities in the diaspora?
-Does your positionality as a researcher present important diasporic and/or hybrid perspectives that shape and model your research ethics and praxis?
-Have you encountered critical lessons on insider-outsider dynamics that inform the shifting and lived aspects of research practice?
If these questions fit your research worldview, I invite you to submit an abstract for our panel at the Association for African Studies in Germany (VAD) and the Swiss Society for African Studies (SGAS/SSEA) joint conference 2026: "African Perspectives on Global Transformations" SGASVAD2026 at the University of Basel, Switzerland.
Panel title - P.2.06 Insider-Outsider Tensions in the Field: Researching Africa and African Communities from Diasporic and Hybrid Positionalities.
We welcome reflections from diaspora scholars studying African societies and African diasporic communities whose work engages with issues of positionality, identity, trust, power dynamics and ethics.
Submissions from different disciplines are encouraged to ensure diverse perspectives that unpack the methodological and ethical complexities of studying Africa or Africans from the "outside" while being an "insider".
Paper proposals must consist of:
-Paper title
-An abstract of max 250 words
-Name, institutional affiliation and email address of author(s)
Deadline: 11 January 2026 (23:59 CET)
Conference Details: August 26-28, 2026 | University of Basel, Switzerland
SUBMIT Here: https://lnkd.in/eZVxtJcV
I'm delighted to be co-organising this with Nicholas Anakwue.
Kindly share with interested colleagues and networks!
