Olufunke Baruwa to join the Panel Discussion on Trump and Nigeria, November 16, 2025



Olufunke Baruwa is an international development specialist with over two decades of experience across government, philanthropy and civil society working at the intersection of gender/social inclusion, social justice and public policy. She has led several social policies and reforms in Nigeria and across Africa and has served at various times as Program Officer at the defunct Petroleum (Special) Trust Fund and National Poverty Eradication Program (NAPEP); Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Women's Trust Fund; Gender Advisor at the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs; Technical Assistant Research, Policy & Planning in the Ministry of Communication Technology and Deputy Director, Federal Ministry of Education.

Until recently, Olufunke was the Regional Program Officer for Gender, Racial and Ethnic Justice at the Ford Foundation Office for West Africa including Nigeria, Ghana and Senegal, where she led work on ending gender-based violence (GBV) particularly against women and girls using the framework of prevention as a response to GBV. Prior to joining Ford, she was the Project Management Specialist, Civil Society and Media in the Peace & Democratic Governance Office of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) Nigeria where she designed and led multi-million-dollar civil society strengthening projects. Currently, she consults independently for various organisations including Luminate Group, Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), MacArthur Foundation and now as the Gender, Disability & Social Inclusion Adviser for the FCDO/DAI's Partnership for Agile Governance and Climate Change (PACE) Program.

She serves on various national and international boards including the Internet Society as a Trustee, CARE Nigeria and chairs the board of the Nigerian Women Trust Fund. Olufunke is a Senior Fellow at the Lagos Business School, the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy & Development and Faculty at the School of Politics, Policy & Governance. She is also a mentor, public speaker and weekly columnist for Leadership Newspaper where she addresses everyday issues in governance, public policy, politics, gender inclusion and social justice.

As one of '17 women changing the world' identified by the Institute for Inclusive Security at its 2015 Colloquium held at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government in Cambridge, Massachusetts, she is a member of the Institute's Women Waging Peace Network. Olufunke holds a B.Sc. Business Administration and an MBA in Management from the Universities of Abuja and Nigeria, Nsukka with post-graduate certifications in Gender from the University of East Anglia and Public Policy & Management from the University of York as a 2011 Commonwealth Scholar. She also holds an MA in Corruption & Governance from the University of Sussex and is currently pursuing a PhD in Gender and Development Studies.
