I accept the compromise you have presented in the true spirit

that Brother Oloye and Iyke Ajitona also have some cogent reasons

for taking their opposite stand. But they also need to take off their

cloudy goggles and appreciate the few beautiful attributes about and of Nigeria

and Nigerians at least for a few hours this weekend.

 

Now I need more help--I have got to come with 50 good reasons why Nigeria

are justified in celebrating their nations 50 years of freedom from colonial rule?

 

Haba--How could Iyke, Oloye and Dr Val Ojo approve of throwing remembrance parties (to turn the back of

the departed) 40 to 50 years after they are dead (in Yorubaland) and then turn around to  frown on marking

Nigeria's 50 anniversary with some modest celebrations?

Hi Dr. Kassim and Oloye  Awojoodu,

Let me try to split the difference:

We seldom think of celebrating the birthday of any individual repeatedly over a 50 year period in which the individual is steadily getting worse and worse with regard to our modest expectation of him/her. If we really love the individual, we must, at some point, show some irritation and/or disgust for the retrogression. When you continually applaud an individual, you are tacitly approving what that individual is doing or not doing. 

There is however an aspect of Nigeria that is always worth celebrating and that is the ordinary peoples of Nigeria. In their different cultures and world views, you find qualities of empathy, community spirit, wisdom, perseverance, industry and energy. These are abundant ingredients for making a great nation state. All that is needed to add to these ingredients is a governance structure that is as good as the peoples. True federalism is the answer.

of members of their families, their friends and co workers etc.?

Not everything in Nigeria is as gloomy as it is portrayed in our listservs and in other media.

I spent at least 45 minutes looking at Nigeria on Google Earth 3D yesterday. My brother Oloye,

we do have some things to celebrate in Nigeria, while recognizing that we need to

work  harder to make things better for the next 50 years!

 

Hurray! Hurray!! Hurray!!! for Nigeria and N igerians this weekend.

 

Saturday October 2nd, 2010 is the day that has been designated by the officials of the Nigerian Canadian

Association  as the day to paint the tcity green ad white and Miliki in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Let is have a good time at home in Nigeria and wherever in the world we may be.

 

The party poopers can stay home and sulk:)
