Obiechina, author of numerous books, including Language and Theme: Essays on African Literature; Culture, Tradition and Society in the West African Novel; An African Popular Literature; and Onitsha Market Literature, was widely regarded as a preeminent authority on African literature and culture. Obiechina, who for many years was a professor at the University of Nigeria (Nsukka), also held fellowships and teaching posts at universities in the UK as well the US Рamong them, Cambridge University, University of Washington, Seattle, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Ferrum College, Virginia, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, University of Pittsburgh, Bradford Campus, and Harvard University, Cambridge, MA. He once served as deputy vice chancellor at UNN as well as education attach̩ at the Nigerian mission in the US. Professor Obiechina lived in Silver Spring, Maryland with his wife. His family has not released information about his cause of death or funeral arrangements.
