USA Africa Dialogue Series - Re: ||NaijaObserver|| Re: [NIgerianWorldForum] 2011: Nigeria closes primary, secondary schools for voters' registration

Dear All:

This order from the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT is ridiculous, and is anti-federalist:

1.  Why include private and even state schools?  What then is the distinction between public and private schools, and even between federal and state institutions if a federal exercise can just be used to impinge on such a FUNDAMENTAL service as education - for a whole month?

2.  Secondly, the registration exercise itself will last from 15th-29th January, and display from 3rd-8th February.

5  Registration of Voters 15th – 29th  January, 2011 Pursuant to Section 9(5)  of the Electoral Act, 2010
6 Display of Register of Voters for claims and objections. 3rd February, 2011 –8th February, 2011 Pursuant to Section 19(1)  of the Electoral Act, 2010

Since there will be only one DDC machine per polling unit available for registration, and even if EVERY school in the country were a polling/registration unit,  why should the ENTIRE SCHOOL be closed down for that exercise, when the number of rooms needed might be no more than one, two or three?

The majority of schools will see only trickles of registrants in the month - and to be shut down all of that time?

One can even see a PUBLIC HOLIDAY being declared for one week - more to aid the registrants.  One can see schools being closed down for Election Day - as is the case in the US, where virtually all schools are used for polling units -  but to close the schools for ONE MONTH for voter registration is to show how little education is valued relative to POLITICS in our country.

This is not a good decision at all, and it should be reversed, with common sense prevailing.  Are we in a military regime or what?

Inquiring minds want to know.

2011: Nigeria closes primary, secondary schools for voters' registration

Schools closed for a whole month across the Country for Voter-Registration! This action of the Nation's Minister of Education may ache in the ears of non-Nigerians. All Nigerians born and raised in Nigeria should take a deep breath and reason with the Minister. Key facts to note:

  • In all Local Governments across the Country, the only facilities readily accessible for civic functions are the primary and secondary schools' premises.
  • Primary and Secondary schools are the only civic centers in all Local Govts that are within walking distances for all citizens.
  • It will not cost any citizen any money to arrive at Registration Site. Hence, no excuse to not register to vote. How about that?
  • Is it worth it to keep the children at home for a month so that their parents can have ample time (considering their very busy schedule) to make their way to the nearest school grounds for voter-registration? You know how your folks are at home. Don't you?

Please don't forget that Nigeria is functionally a very young Democracy. The masses are still struggling to get used to civic responsibilities. If the process is not made easy enough, they would care less and default to complacency. Believe it or not. Cheers and peace.
