Umuibe,
My family and I joined a group that traveled from Cancun, Mexico to the world-renown Mayan ruins at Chichen-Itza located in the southern Mexican state of Yucatan. The 200 kilometer bus ride from Cancun gave us a taste of the wild open spaces of northern end of Central America; home of Mayan people whose ancient ruins can also be found in Honduras, El Salvador, Belize and Guatemala.
The ancient Mayans were great architects, astronomers and artists. They independently developed their own hieroglyphs and wrote volumes about their great civilization. The entirety of these writings were gathered and summarily destroyed by their Spanish conquerors who obviously made no sense out of them. The area is still populated by descendants of ancient Mayans who are still capable of creating very marvelous artwork in stone, metal as well as animal and plant parts.
The pyramid in photos, unlike the Egyptian counterpart, is not a burial chamber for their supreme leader. It is actually an astronomical timepiece situated at the town center for tracking movement of the heavenly bodies and seasons of the year.
Photos were taken last Sunday (July 17, 2011).
Okenwa.
