USA Africa Dialogue Series - CAMBRIDGE University is seeking a PhD research student to study the mechanics of shaving facial hair : Razor-sharp mind wanted for cutting-edge PhD work

Good morning all,

I this for the first time a few minutes ago  and felt it may come in handy for some of our brothers and sisters who have the knowledge and are  looking for such an opportunity.  Please take note that the deadline for the application is the 16th of this month. Two days away.  Sorry the notice is short. This is so  because I just saw it myself.  It was advertised on the 8th of this month.  Good luck.

All the best,
Ifuemi Adepoju

Razor-sharp mind wanted for cutting-edge PhD work

CAMBRIDGE University is seeking a PhD research student to study the mechanics of shaving facial hair.

It has posted details of the position on its website, and the project will be funded by Procter & Gamble through its subsidiary Gillette.

The position, with a limit of a three-year tenure, would be within the university's Department of Engineering.

The website states: "A position exists for a PhD research student to develop a fundamental understanding of the mechanics of shaving of facial hair.

"Gillette have developed instrumentation capability to characterise the mechanical response of hair during shaving.

"The broad aim of the research is to extend the capability through further characterisation of the mechanical aspects of shaving.

"Further characterisation will enhance model fidelity of predictive simulation of the shaving process.

"The PhD project will focus on understanding the mechanical interactions typical of wet shaving."

Donna Turner, manager at Mr Polito's Barber Shop in Silver Street, Cambridge, said she thought it was a strange choice of topic for a PhD.

She said: "I do think it's an odd thing to do a PhD in. It would be interesting to read it. It's different."

Applicants must have a strong first degree in a relevant discipline such as mechanical or bio-medical engineering, materials science or physics.

The start date for the project is January 5. The closing date for applications is Friday, September 16.

Applicants are asked to send a covering letter,  CV, academic transcripts and the names of two academic referees that can be contacted, if short-listed, to Ms Helen Slater, Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge, Trumpington Street, Cambridge, CB2 1PZ.

She can also be contacted by calling (01223) 748241 or by emailing has22@eng.cam.ac.uk.
