The Undertakers Of The North
There is a creature one may describe as 'living death'. It has its own typifications: lean, hungered and haggard, his spindly legs barely able to carry him; the "living death" cuts the figure of a caricature badly done by a kindergarten. He probably subsists on one poor meal a day. And thereafter, his weak heart thumping anxiously on its thin shell of skin, the 'living death' soon stares sightlessly into nothingness wondering when and from where the next survival ration would come. Down the road squats another. The tropical rain drenches him to the marrow. And when it abates, the equally heartless tropical sun in a show of cruel mercy heats off the residual water from the ragged clothes that barely cover his bony frame. Bowl in hand, he turns whitened or jaundiced but sunken eyes at you, tugging at the ropes of your heart, your mercy's seat, for a dime. These 'living deaths' are the destitute of Kano and the North, the relics of God's creatures, the Beautiful One made in his own image and likeness.
They are the images of the Omnipotent One. He asked to reign till He comes again. They are the ones He enjoined to possess and dominate the land. The Undertakers of the North, however, had a different design. El Rufai and Sanusi Lamido would want Nigerians, especially Nigerians of the
Niger Delta, to believe that they have created these dregs of the earth, these poor of the poor in their Northern Nigeria. It is true that buck-passing is a tool of failure and incompetence aimed at taking the limelight off their tables. It is equally true that the truth is an inexorable limelight that will shine ever brighter where it is not wanted.
The Undertakers of Kano and North, as will presently be demonstrated, have sucked the bones of the North clean of all its marrow. The Undertakers of Kano and the North have, like relentless leeches, sucked the North and Nigeria dry of its life blood. But what are the vessels for the parasitic activities and immoral appetite of the Undertakers of the North. Their voracious appetite for public funds is their deadliest and most potent tool. Read on.
In 2012, Ekiti State budgeted N88 billion for its activities. It was N90 billion, N144 billion, N82 billion and N74 billion for Kwara, Cross River, Anambra and Enugu in that order. The four Boko Haram states of Kano, Borno, Gombe and Yobe had a combined budgeted total of N530 billion
with that of Kano - N210 billion - being thrice the budget of Enugu and twice that of Anambra, and Ekiti each. El Rufai, Sanusi Lamido and other Mallam Undertakers of Kano and the North may argue that Kano, being the most populated state in Nigeria, should receive the highest allocation from the Federal Government. Agreed, but come next census, let the Mallams and Alhajis open their harems to the enumerators! In spite of this whopping amount of money, Kano has a distressing population of 1.6 million destitutes. Ninety per cent of students in Kano fail WAEC. The poverty level in Kano is higher than that of Enugu, Kwara and Anambra States put together. I beg your attention Undertakers of Kano and the North. Any answer el Rufai, any answer Sanusi? From the figures given above Ekiti, Yobe and Gombe States budgeted about the same amount of money last year. It is instructive to note however that only 17 students passed WAEC and NECO. In Gombe State last year, 2011. This is probably too low a level of success for one village school in
Ekiti State in any given year. Loquacious el Rufai may step out to offer a reason. Enugu and Anambra States had a combined budget of N156 billion in 2011. Kano and Borno, two Boko Haram states, budgeted N360 billion, more than double that of the two MASSOB states of Igboland. Has MASSOB gone about bombing Mosques and cutting the throats of Muslims?
Sanusi Lamido, Mallam, any response? The poverty and unemployment levels on Borno are more than thrice those of Enugu State with a budget less than half that of Borno. Why? Cross River State in the Niger Delta has become a tourist haven in Nigeria and the world. It is a state with a much lower budget than the 'Boko' state of Borno, Nigeria's Afghanistan. Why is the North so undeveloped? And who and what lie at the back of it? The answer is in your mouth: they are the Undertakers of Kano, Borno and the Fulani-ravaged North. The el Rufais and Sanusi Lamidos of this world, all of them Mallams, have only indulged in the usual pastime of the criminal elite who confronted with the awry consequences of their cruelty, create destractions to take public attention elsewhere, only this time, their antics are hopelessly vegetable.
So far, some attempts have been made to tell all stakeholders in the wellbeing of the Nigerian project that the disparity between the development of the six Boko Haram northern states and that of the Niger Delta states used by el Rufai, Sanusi Lamido and other mallams of their class, as the
basis for the madness unleashed on their people, is a hoax. It cannot hold water for the simple reason that the Niger Delta states use whatever money that accrues to them with utmost prudence and telling effect whereas the Boko Haram Six of the North East foster Somalia and
Afghanistan in Nigeria with theirs. And they have succeeded because of the shameless erotic relationship between the political class and the aristocratic undertakers. This sponsored terrorism stampedes Nigeria into putting more funds into the deep pockets of the Mallams to quench the inferno of their greed and to finance their senseless chase for federal power.
The Undertakers of the North and their military collaborators came into greater limelight during the mad days of the 'serial coups' that ended with President Olusegun Obasanjo's government. A simple analysis of the bases for those deleterious events points at one factor - the oil wealth of the Niger Delta. That was the beginning and the end of the whole matter. And the Undertakers of the North, aided and abetted by their military Generals (all of them Northerners), truly made hay ('oil'). Ross Alabo- George opines that the North, through their aristocrats and ex-military rulers (except General Buhari), rake in more oil money (from the Niger Delta) individually, than any Niger Delta State, and collectively more than twice the funds of the entire Niger Delta region put together. This amount to a firm control by the North of 80 per cent of the crude oil and gas produced by indigenous companies in the Niger Delta. And the instruments of this indecent rape and blatant looting of the resources of the Niger Delta are Babangida, Abacha and Abdulsalami.
And the thieving Mallams know no shame and show no trepidation in accusing the victims of their robbery of the underdevelopment and poverty of their North. True, Shakespeare had us in mind when he wrote that 'Caesar would be no god if we were not underlings.'
Two, just two, oil exploration and production companies owned by Mai Deribe of Borno (Cavendish Oil) and T. Y. Danjuma (Sapetro) make more money than the whole nation of Ghana and the entire states of the Niger Delta combined, every month. If any financial genie puts that amount of money into the hands of Governor Obi of Anambra, the state would metamorphose into South Korea in five years. Give that kind of money to Governor Akpabio of Akwa Ibom and his state would be made a Nigerian Manhattan, Governor Fashola of Lagos could transform Lagos state into New York overnight if he had that kind of money. But not so in Northern Nigeria. The heartless underdevelopers of their people and the land are the vassals of the political class and their lay-back masters, the parasitic grabbers of the Northern aristocracy. They are the Undertakers of the North and Nigeria and our collective prosperity.
