  • Positions are based in Mountain View, CA.
 
  • Interested candidates may want to consider relocating to the Mountain View area if commuting from their home is not possible
 
  • Assignments are 3 to 6 months long with a 40 hour work week
 
 
Languages: Amharic, Hausa, Kinyarwanda, Somali, Wolof, Xhosa, Yoruba and Zulu.
 
1. As a Language Expert/Data Evaluator and a native speaker of one of the target languages, you will be part of a team based in Mountain View (CA), processing large amounts of linguistic data and carrying out a number of tasks to improve the quality of Google's machine translation technology in your own language.
 
This includes:
  • Evaluating, annotating and classifying linguistic data;
  • Labeling text for disambiguation, expansion and text normalization;

Job Requirements
  • Native speaker of one of the target languages (with good command of the stander dialect and good knowledge of orthography and grammar) and fluent in English;
  • Computer-literate (should feel comfortable using in-house tools);
  • Attention to detail;
  • Passion for languages and a keen interest in technology;
  • Good organizational skills;
  • A degree in a language-related field such as linguistics, language teaching, translation, editing, writing, proofreading, or similar is a plus. 

2. Language Expert Engineer will manage projects' tasks related to automatic processing of natural language text in one of the target languages (see languages above)
 
This includes:
  • Evaluating, annotating and classifying linguistic data;
  • Writing scripts to collect and process data; improving existing product infrastructure.
  • Fluent speaking and writing skills in one of the target languages listed above and proficient in English;
  • Computer science undergraduate or equivalent experience;
  • Proficiency in programming in Python, Perl, or C++;
  • Passion for language and a keen interest in technology;
  • Good knowledge of orthography and grammar in the target language;
  • Background in data mining a plus;
  • Ability to quickly grasp technical concepts;
  • Excellent verbal and written communicator
