USA Africa Dialogue Series - Nigeria 2015 – Tambuwal in Crowded Race for Presidency

Kaduna — Though he has not declared his presidential ambition, Speaker Aminu Tambuwal's steps bear the imprint of a likely candidate in the 2015 battle.

Two years away for the 2015 general elections and in the maze of political confusion in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over its adherence to its power rotation principle, the name of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon Aminu Tambuwal, has crept into the roll call for the presidential race. The Forty-seven-year-old politician did not announce his entrance into the race, but what have been silent talks in the political circle in close to a year now, came to the front-burner when former President Ibrahim Babangida, on April 6, 2013, at the Vanguard Man of the Year Award investiture of Speaker Tambuwal advised him, to seek "something higher." According to him, the Speaker has the capacity "to sustain the labour of our heroes past. When leaders like Tambuwal delivered on their electoral promise, we advise them to try something higher. For Tambuwal, your guess is as good as mine. Well done."

The operational phrase in IBB's comment on which the Speaker's supporters hang their argument is the delivery of Tambuwal's electoral promise. Expounding this theme, Rep. Ali Ahmad (PDP, Kwara) and Chairman House Committee on Justice, speaking in an interview with Sunday Trust on Tambuwal's eligibility for the 2015 presidential contest, said, "Anybody who knows the Honourable Speaker and the way he has steered the House in the last two years and the way and manner he has been able to hold firm the House, will know that not a single pen has been thrown in this Assembly. That shows you glaringly the quality of this man better than what I will say about him. So anybody can judge his capacity to control and manage people with different ideas and disposition. So a man like that has what it takes to be the president of this country."Read More
