Dear All,
This is a government ploy to blackmail ASUU and it will fail. The rented Market women, I believe, do not know the infrastructural decay in Nigerian public universities.
In my own opinion, they should first of all visit the environments of Nigerian public universities and see things for themselves before going to Abuja. Those rented women should know that many of our academic staff have their children and wards in Nigerian public universities as well. They should not feel more passionate than our colleagues. They should not be ponds in the hand of government that waits until there is a strike before they wake up to their responsibility.
ASUU is not a political organization and they cannot be because of the nature of their natural calling to service. They cannot be used by any politicians and that must be made clear to all and sundry.
Their allowances like those other Nigerians in public offices and political office holders must not be paid in arrears. It is logically immoral to ask academic staff in our public universities to go back to work without getting their legitimate dues just as the market women will not go home at the end of the day without getting their money from their customers.
ASUU is not asking for the interests on their allowances from government because they are very considerate in the sense that it will come from the sweat of most parents including market women. In other words, the financial burden of paying interests on the allowances will be too much to bear by the public and that is why ASUU is not bothering government about it.
I honestly thought those women would not succumb to government antics to blackmail ASUU. It is rather unfortunate that they have been allowed to be used.
My view is that government should play ball and live up to the agreement they willfully signed in 2009 with ASUU to end the strike. That is the most reasonable thing to do right now.
