With the Union Jack lowered, the green-white-green emerged – thanks to the amalgamation of the Southern and Northern protectorates of this country. The centenary came at the hills of the British conquest – A Master which indulged on the untapped resources of the sub-Saharan region it named Nigeria – a designation said to have come from the amorous nigh-time chat of Sir Fredrick Lord Lugard and Flora Shaw, his mistress at the time. No doubt, Shaw's feminine prowess had its way over other names like Royal Niger Company Territories and Central Sudan proposed by the colonial administrators.
From 1914 to 2014, the country sailed through turbulent waters. In the area of governance, military interventions punctured the flow of what would have catapulted the dreams and aspirations of the new-fangled West African State. The demons of bribery and corruption gave way to a culture of impunity which infiltrated every strata of society. These irregularities set the stage for political bickering, nepotism and sectionalism. Religious elements (fanaticism) also crept into national life and laid the eggs of discord. These and other reasons fanned the embers of selfishness leading to the civil war that took place from
