Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Professor Laya of Niger has moved on to the realm of ancestors

I have not read him. I hope his work is translated to other languages soon.
It is sad to lose such an intellectual. May his soul rest in peace as he joins his ancestors.

Professor Laya:

The great Nigerien Sociologist from Niger died August 22, 2014.
He is a great Pan Africanist committed to the African cultural renaissance project.   I met in him in Niamey years ago  he was extremely energetic given the fact that he was in his 70's.  He kept abreast of the contemporary academic and intellectual  issues of his time.  We have to make sure that his memory remain fresh and present in our minds.  We will continue to make references to him in the present not in the past,  He left his imprints by explaining the culture of his people to the world.

The challenge for us his intellectual children is to make sure that his texts are translated into African and European languages as widely as possible.  I remember how he tried to encourage me to finish my dissertation. He said finish the work even if I die I will know that you h finished.  I am grateful to Dr. Zainab Hadari for introducing me to this great intellectual.  My condolences to his family and I hope that Allah gives them fortitude to overcome the grief associated with death. ProfessorLaya I know that you are in the realm of Osiris and you have reunited with Cheikh Anta Diop, Marcus Garvey, Frantz Fanon, Nkrumah, and Chris Hani.   Rest in Peace Professor.
