Charity begins at home and it's obvious (to me at least) that in making such a pointed reference to the state of things in the Yoruba Nation today, Professor Segun Ogungbemi was significantly calling attention to the need for more attention to the educational policy which was so effectively introduced by the late great Chief Obafemi Awolowo, in Western Nigeria  - and by implication, lamenting the general collapse in educational standards  in the North, Igbo-land in the East, and other parts of the South as well)

I don't think that we should read and understand this simple truth out of context or think that there is something devious or sinisterly "tribalistic" about the Professor's wake-up call to you all.... at least he seems to have woken us up and that's why we're talking about it...

Sincerely,

Cornelius

Why the above statement? What does it mean? Is it not more the case that the region is punching well below her weight? Do Nigeria's challenges now include the challenge of low expectation? In my opinion, no region has done well enough. They should all have done better and the need to do better is more urgent in some regions than others.

It is at the same time scary and tragic that someone thought this report deserves to be brought to the attention of Governors in Yoruba land and other Yoruba in Kogi and Kwara only- glaring evidence of the trouble with Nigeria.

Thank you ba

I hope the Governors in Yoruba land and other Yoruba in Kogi and Kwara are taking notes. It is time to set the priority right.

It is sad that we are in this terrible mess and the need to wake up is now.

Thanks for this Prof.

My People:

The Tables below shows a preliminary analysis of the WAEC 2014 results for Nigeria from data recently presented by that testing body.  The candidate population, pass rate differences and gender gap are presented on a state- and geo-political basis, for the education of the reader.

There is clearly a participation and pass rate gap crisis in the North-East (pass rate less than 10%), and a gender gap in the North-West of Nigeria.  With a pass rate of above 50%, the South-East region is punching well above its weight, while Anambra's pass rate of 66% is truly commendable, all things being equal.

And there you have it.
