USA Africa Dialogue Series - The Wangari Maathai and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Awards

On March 26 during the annual Africa conference, the University of Texas at Austin will inaugurate two new awards in honor of Wangari Maathai and Elllen Johnson. The second inauguration of both awards will also be done at Redeemer’s University, Ede, during the 2016 TOFAC.


The Wangari Maathai Award 

The Wangari Maathai Award for Innovative Scholarship and Leadership recognizes the stellar and emerging work of a junior scholar whose contributions to enhancing the future of Africa is expected to have an enduring transformational impact.  The recipient of this award is expected to ultimately embody and honor in quality and stature the work of Wangari Maathai, who was a scientist, scholar, feminist, environmentalist and conservationist, political and human rights activist, politician, distinguished academic chair, goodwill ambassador, recipient of fifteen honorary doctorates, Nobel Peace laureate, academic and public intellectual, philanthropist, Messenger of peace, founder of the Green Belt Movement, and Africa’s most recognized and decorated activist.

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Award

 

This award is intended to recognize and reward a graduate student whose research and scholarship already stands out for innovation, originality of thought, potential to contribute significantly to her/his discipline, and leadership. The award is named after Africa's first elected female head of state, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, named the best president her country ever had, democracy activist, nation builder, tenacious state reformer, former United Nations technocrat, Nobel Peace laureate, recipient of the American Presidential  Medal of Freedom as well as more than fourteen honorary doctorates from US and African universities. This award in her name anticipates a student whose research and scholarship blazes a trail and inspires positive leadership values to resemble and exceed that by Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
