Dear Patron,

This weekend, the second edition of ART X Lagos will take place, bringing innovative and contemporary African art from around the continent and Diaspora to Lagos. With only 3 days to go, and so much to look forward to, today we are highlighting our Curated Projects - a series of special exhibitions by solo artists that will be displayed throughout the venue during the fair. The six presentations will explore how artists draw from the everyday to form inventive strategies that shape contemporary aesthetics, while alerting us to consider how we relate to an environment and interpret its history.

Our curated projects will feature alongside our exhibiting artists and galleries from over 15 countries across Africa and the Diaspora, as well as our live art pavilions, riveting talks program and exciting music show.

We look forward to seeing you at The Civic Centre on Friday 3rd November (VIP Preview - Invitation Only) as well as our Open Days on 4th and 5th November.

See you soon!

Team ART X

Marking the 100th birthday of Nigerian master artist and modern art pioneer Ben Enwonwu MBE, seven African hardwood figures, sculpted by Enwonwu more than half a century ago, will be presented to the Nigerian public for the first time. The works, commissioned by the Daily Mail, are presented courtesy of the Access Bank private collection.

In her long-term project 'Education is Forbidden', Nigerian interdisciplinary artist and journalist Rahima Gambo presents a contemplative picture on the spectre of the Boko Haram conflict, the nature of memory, and the consequences of colonial education in northeastern Nigeria.

Marking two decades since the passing of Fela Anikulapo Kuti, this retrospective exhibition by Lemi Ghariokwu and Jazz Hole looks at the unique interplay of aesthetics and the Nigerian socio-political climate of the 1970s in Ghariokwu's art. Internationally renowned as the mastermind behind 26 of Fela's record jacket artworks, a selection of these works, as well as rarely and never-before-exhibited archival documents, sketches and photographs from the artist's private collection will be on view.

Represented by Lagos gallery Art Twenty One, Nigerian artist Olu Amoda will present new works: two large format assemblage sculptures which are part of the artist's ongoing capsule series. The dome-shaped artworks manifest what the artist describes as "the aura of the fifth dimension".

The artist duo of Bofa de Cara present a two-part film, "My African Mind", and "My European Mind" to offer an at times humorous look at the colonial gaze and mental slavery. A partnership between Angolan artist Nástio Mosquito and Spanish artist Pere Ortín, the duo's audiovisual practice works with history, identity, and perspectives. Their two-part film screening of 'My African Mind' and 'My European Mind' presents artworks engaging with the relationship and evolution between language, and particular worldviews.

Yaw Owusu uses otherwise worthless materials to engage complex notions of value, exchange and locality in an increasingly global environment. In his intricate sculptures, fashioned from the valueless 1 Pesewa coin, he presents glittering totems wryly questioning the failures of Ghana's ongoing infrastructural development, all the while engaging complex notions of value, exchange and locality in an increasingly global environment. He is represented by Gallery 1957, Accra.

In emerging artist Johnson Uwadinma's 'Amnesia', the site-specific mixed media installation reflects on memory, the dynamics within Nigerian historiographies, and the difficulties associated with transcending collective memory. Born in Zaria, he is represented by Boys' Quarters Project Space, a Port Harcourt-based contemporary art gallery established by Zina Saro-Wiwa.

Expanding on her practice exploring the presence of women in public spaces, Nigerian-American artist Wura-Natasha Ogunji's presents 'If I loved you', a performance that wrestles with questions about physical beauty and its destruction, together with the dynamics of seeing and being seen.

This year, Absolut Nigeria has commissioned Lagos-based artist Olatunde Alara to respond to the theme of 'The Artist as Citizen'. The installation, titled 'SMILE', addresses the spectre of mental illness, a taboo topic. Absolut supports freedom of expression, and for the voices of the unheard to be heard.
