Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Fwd: RISING SUN STAR OF THE MONTH: Faraday Okoro, Winner of $1M Grant to Make ‘Nigerian Prince’ Movie About Email Scammers

Happy New Year to you, also, Bolaji Aluko. I trust you were able to spend time with your loved ones during the holidays.

Permit me to recommend starting the year on a note of humility, like Three Wise Kings, as in The Journey of the Magi. You know some things, but you don't know a whole lot about the things you think you know. Like the Magi, you want to embark on the quest for knowledge with an open mind, not insinuations and innuendos. And, like the Three Wise Kings, you'd be changed or transformed by the resulting new knowledge for your own good and that of society. This is the essence and goal of education in the liberal arts (humanities, social sciences, and basic and applied sciences).

You could start your quest by asking your friends from East of the Niger whose names are "Anyanwu" or "Nwanyanwu/Nwa Anyanwu" (The Sun), communities named "Owuwa Anyanwu" (The Rising Sun); or even the publishers of The Sun Newspaper (which I'm sure you have seen/read) whether these names are your so-called "dog whistles to Biafra." Please keep a good distance while making this inquiry to avoid a "dirty slap" on your face, because not many people can stand this insult.

Furthermore, may I suggestyou ask any Igbo you know, or better still, pick up any write-up by some cultural anthropologists on what "The Rising Sun" means in Igbo cosmology, especially the concepts of time, justice and fairness. I'd recommend you find out, particularly, why Ndi-Igbo would swear or dread to swear by "The Rising Sun." As a corollary, you might also find a thing or two about "Odida Anyanwu", the Setting Sun or sunset.

Good luck as you embark on this potentially transformative journey. And, I pray that this change be reflected on this forum, going forward. Amen!

Regards,

Okey Iheduru
Peace as Always!

First, a Happy New Year to you and yours.

Secondly, Congratulations to Faraday Okoro on his award.  Must be much deserved.

But thirdly, which one be Rising Sun star again? A dog whistle to Biafra?

Just asking for clarification...

RISING SUN STAR OF THE MONTH: Faraday Okoro, Winner of $1M Grant to Make 'Nigerian Prince' Movie About Email Scammers

Nigerian-American filmmaker, Faraday Okoro's proposed movie"Nigerian Prince"  won $1 million AT&T Grant at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival.

The debut feature film is a coming of age, heist thriller, set in Lagos, Nigeria. The film uncovers the hidden world of "Nigerian email" scammers, otherwise known to the West as Nigerian Prince scammers. It's about a Nigerian-American teen sent to Nigeria against his will, but later teams with his Nigerian cousin to scam unsuspecting foreigners in order to earn money for a ticket back to the United States.
