Long time. I could sense that you enjoyed the visit  to where your umbilical chord was buried. Just want to shed light on one of your observations" 

"Women cannot inherit land from their ancestors because they are supposed to marry and get attached to someone else (another man).

 I am an Akuapem Guan. We inherit patrilineally.  But the queen-mother is more powerful than the king. In matters of land tenure, the idea is that a woman marries and goes to his husband's kinspeople to raise his children and for that reason she cannot be entrusted with the land that belonged to the patrilineage. But if the father is alive and called the extended family together to say that I give a portion of my land to my daughter, the said portion of land remains the property of the daughter. If the daughter indentures it, it is transferable to her children, but there children's father cannot become the owner of the said land. To avoid these complications, families are buying their own lands. The other thing is patrilocality (hope my concept is right). My sisters can live with their children in our father's house as long as they are alive. The tradition is that should my sisters pass on, their children would be asked to move t their fathers' house.

I am just back from our local African community, and you bet, I
enjoyed the trip! The faces of relatives I met, familiar and
unfamiliar. All the communion in the form of surplus eating and
drinking! Who says only my corpse can return to my kinsmen after
serving my country? Mbanu! No, not me! My umbilical cord was buried
there! Maybe I have to blog about that, too. But, right now, my trip
has triggered off that need to reform some local Igbo practices. And
so, as I was eating and drinking, I was observing and conceiving an
essay.
