By Chidi Anthony Opara
On the grounds of the bastion,
A bastion put on siege always
By fliers of supremacist flags
Acting on inspiration from accidental leaders,
One after another
Beautiful long automobiles
Arrive.
The surrogate Gods and goddesses
Alight,
Faces covered with covid face covers,
They swagger into the sanctum.
Enveloped
In the opulence of the sanctum,
They wait to be called onto the arena
Where the oaths
To administer are administered.
At the hour of oath taking,
The surrogate Gods and Goddesses
Are called and chaperoned
Onto the arena by minions of officialdom.
"So help me God" reverberates again.
That recurring phrase
Heralds
The end of a phase
And the beginning of a phase.
A new phase begins,
The help of God sought
Discarded.
The surrogate Gods and Goddesses
Play the role
Of the substantive God.
