Colonel (Rtd) Festus Boahen Aboagye to join the Panel Discussion on Coups in Africa, September 24, 2023
Colonel Festus B. Aboagye (Rtd) is a security analyst and a consultant on UN/AU Joint Planning for AU Peace Support Operations, a UNDP Consultant on Disarmament in South Sudan, an adjunct member of the Center on Democratic Transitions – Ghana, and a former member of Save the Children International Military Advisory Group. He is the Head of the Peace Missions Program (PMP) at the Institute for Security Studies (ISS). Festus served with the Organization of African Unity (OAU) from August 2000 to May 2002 as a Senior Military Expert for the Ethiopia-Eritrea conflict and peace process. From March 2003 to March 2004, he served the African Union (AU) as Consultant / Panel Member for the development of the Policy Framework for the African Standby Force and later as Senior Military Advisor to the Head of the African Mission in Burundi (AMIB). Before his service with the OAU/AU, Festus served in the Ghana Army and attained the rank of Colonel. He is a veteran of several UN peace operations and also served with ECOMOG in Liberia from 1997-98. He is the author of "The Ghana Army, A Concise Contemporary Guide to its Regimental Centennial History (1897-1999)" and "ECOMOG, A Sub-Regional Experience in Conflict Prevention, Management and Peacekeeping in Liberia." He has also published papers on African regional peace operations and regional collaboration with the UN System.
