Nigerian military begins probe of officers detained for alleged coup plot

Nigeria's military is in the spotlight after quietly launching an investigation into 20 detained officers accused of plotting a coup. The alleged plot—discovered just before Independence Day—sent shockwaves through the defence hierarchy, forcing the authorities to act swiftly. What began as whispers within the barracks has now evolved into one of the most sensitive internal probes in years, raising fresh questions about loyalty and morale within the armed forces.

While the Defence Headquarters insists the move was a precautionary step, insiders say it reflects deeper unease among officers frustrated with leadership and the direction of the country. Intelligence sources revealed that several senior personnel had held "unusual meetings" in recent months, sparking fears of coordinated dissent. For many Nigerians, the revelation has stirred memories of past coups and the fragile trust between military command and the state.

President Bola Tinubu's administration, already navigating economic and political turbulence, now faces a delicate balancing act—maintaining discipline without deepening divisions. The government's decision to cancel the Independence Day parade, initially explained as a "cost-saving measure," now appears tied to the discovery of the alleged conspiracy. Behind the scenes, military investigators are tracing communications and financial records that could reveal whether the plot had external or political links.

Analysts warn that the unfolding investigation could either reinforce the army's internal control or expose fractures long hidden beneath the surface. The outcome of this probe may redefine civil-military relations in Nigeria's young democracy. As the story develops, the lingering question remains: Was this an isolated act of rebellion—or the first signal of broader unrest within the ranks?
