Rev. Matthew Hassan Kukah (CON) is the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, a distinguished scholar, author, and one of Nigeria's most respected voices on governance, justice, and national cohesion. His work bridges faith, public life, and social responsibility, reflecting a lifelong commitment to building a just and democratic society. Bishop Kukah is the author of several influential books that examine religion, politics, democracy, civil society, and reconciliation in Nigeria. His publications include Religion, Politics and Power in Northern Nigeria (1992), Democracy and Civil Society in Nigeria (1999), and Witness to Justice: An Insider Account of Nigeria's Truth Commission (2011). His recent works, Nigeria's Elusive Quest for National Cohesion (2022) and Witness to Reconciliation (2023), further cement his role as a leading voice in national dialogue and peacebuilding.
Across his career, Bishop Kukah has combined pastoral leadership with deep academic engagement, contributing significantly to national conversations on democracy, justice, and reconciliation in Nigeria.
