EDO ORE ISI AGBON
EDO IS THE CENTRE OF THE UNIVERSE
JOURNEYS ACROSS SPACE AND TIME
3
Toyin Adepoju
In what sense is the ancient city of Benin or any place the centre of the universe?
In what sense does the cosmos constellate around the ancient city or anywhere humanity locates itself?
In the sense that every individual is the centre of the cosmos:
the intersection of the personal cosmos and the cosmos beyond the self:
the universe as seen by yourself
the particular constellations of people you interact with
the spaces that exist to be seen by others as they see fit
the people interacted with by others in their own way
My bones
My blood
Melt into the ancient city
Mixing with the blood, the sweat, the tears, shed on that soil by all who have walked that earth across the centuries, and those who will walk it in times to come
My mind becomes the mind of the ancient city
as I melt into the planetary surface and beyond into the planetary core
in a union with terrestrial space
expanding to include planet by planet as they revolve around the sun
palpitating within the solar core
