Of Fela Kuti, Made Kuti,ECOWAS and War by Augustine Togonu-Bickersteth,London,England
In 1938,the year the Augustinian monks came to settle in nigeria the world witnessed the birth of Fela kuti in the present nigeria . He was to be nicknamed Augustinee because of his protruding head.In yoruba a protruding head is referred to as Ogo. pronounced Augur so the name Ogostine by his numerous fans and anglicised to Augustine. Interestingly like Augustine of Hippo of the present day Algeria Fela was a priest,a philosopher and a philanderer
AUGUSTINE was the greatest thinker to have come out of the African continent and Fela the greatest musician.
On August 2 1939 exactly 58 years to the passing away of fela kuti then in 1997 a song was recorded by the German Cabaret singer,Lale Anderson titled ,Lili marlene.
Lily marlene was first broadcast on August 18 1941 a day after the birth of the self styled nigerian military president Genral ibrahim babangida.
August 18 1943,80 ago was Operation Hydra as a precursor to Operation cross bow during the second World War by the alled forces out ro demobilise a German scientific resesrch Centre. BABANGIBA would be given the name Evil genius by the nigeria press to his amusement.the evil genius being a central figure during the second World War.
On August 18 2023 82 years exactly, after lili marlene was recorded the ECOWAS took a decision to invade Niger on an undisclosed day.lili matlene was a favourite song to soldiers on both sides of the conflict.
On August 5 2022 , made Kuti fela"s grand son released a song titled "no more Wars."
Fela led the Africa 70 band and then the Egypt 80 band.
Ilii marlene was a particular favourite of the Afrika corps during the second World World. The soldiers loved listening to it before going to sleep.
Now Algeria of Saint Augustine and Egypt of Egypt 80 band are opposed to War against Niger. Would Fela Kuti saved the Day?
